      Dear students of BS English, Semester 3, welcome to the online course of Morphology! 

      Your first half of Semester 3 was completed during the months of October-December 2019 with the coverage of Phonology. In the second half of the ongoing semester - commencing from June 16, 2020 - you will complete the course titled Morphology (commonly known as the study of the internal structure and formation of words).

      One lesson will be covered each week. The ongoing half of the semester will last for 6 weeks (see course outline for details). The lessons of this course will develop from simple to complex. Accordingly, the formative and summative assessments will also follow the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The initial 2 lessons of this course will focus on lower order cognitive skills (i.e., remember, understand, and apply). The rest of the lessons will gradually help you develop and demonstrate higher order thinking skills (i.e., analyze, evaluate, and create) in addition to lower order thinking skills. To learn about Bloom’s Taxonomy, watch the video by clicking the link titled "Bloom's Taxonomy (Video)" on this page.

      Furthermore, by completing this course with active participation, you will also be able to acquire and practice 21st century learning skills (also known as 4 Cs - critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) embedded within the course coverage.       This online course has been redesigned considering the limited time available and the nature of online and student-centered learning with interactivity, rather than learning passively or feeling alone, during the journey of the course. While being an active online learner, you will experience and participate in three types of interactivity during the course: student-content interactivity (through course materials), student-student interactivity (through formal and informal discussion groups), and student-teacher interactivity (through interactive live sessions, group discussions, and individual chat/call on specific times each week when scheduled).

    • Morphological trees Lesson

      Learning goals:

      In this lesson you will revise your knowledge of word formation rules and compounding. By applying these and the basics you learnt in the previous lessons, you will be able to generate morphological trees (diagrams) by analysing word structures.

    • Dear students, read chapter 7 from page 137 to 146 of the recommended textbook as an authentic reading material for lesson 5 (week 5).

    • Assignment (morphological trees)

      Assignment guidelines:

      Dear students, each of you should have received a list of words (individualised) on your WhatsApp account for the assignment of morphological trees. The list consists of 12 words from which you are required to use any 10 words of your choice to create morphological trees (separate for each word).

      For drawing morphological trees, follow the method learnt from lesson 5 (videos and book reading) this week. You can draw the required trees by using MS Power Point (ppt) slides as it will allow you to draw lines to show relationships among the morphemes of the assigned compound/complex words. If some of you do not feel convenient to use ppt slides, they may draw morpholigical trees on paper and take clear photos and cluster in a single file. The assignment will need to be submitted via UoB LMS accessible at the bottom of lesson 5 (this will appear during weekend). The deadline for submission is Monday, July 20, 2020 (until midnight)
