BACTERIAL GENETICS

OBJECTIVES

The course of Bacterial Genetics (Molecular Biology of Bacteria) will enable the students to learn about the chemical and elemental composition of bacterial genetic materials and their functions; Students will about 10the of “Central Dogma of Bacterial Molecular Biology”, (i.e., Replication of bacterial DNA, transcription of bacterial RNAs, and translation of bacterial proteins). They will also learn about the regulation (control) of bacterial gene expression, DNA mutagenesis, mutagenic agents, DNA damage, and repair. Moreover, the course also covers the topics of genetic transfer and recombination in bacteria; the basic principles of recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering. In the practical section of the course, students will learn about nucleic acid extraction, gel electrophoreses, conventional and Real-Time PCR, DNA sequencing, gene, and genome mapping as well as their practical applications.
