Figures of speech are everywhere in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Learn the difference between figurative and literal language and how you should interpret different types of figures of speech.

If you can't watch, then follow this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P_XeyPh2XY

Task: Share at least 2 or 3 figurative speech in Urdu or your native language, with their meanings and how they are used.

UPDATED: So, when you are asked to give example from either Urdu or your Native Language, that means that you have to think of examples from those languages, not English. You would be then sharing them either in Arabic script (which is how we traditionally write our languages spoken in Pakistan) OR use Roman script.

Peer-reviewed: In this task you are expected to check the work of at least 2 or 3 peers and give them feedback. Check their work, whether they have given correct meaning and examples, or not. If they have made a mistake, then correct them in the response. (You are supposed to read and follow the discussion netiquettes!)

Grade: Competent or Not yet competent

NOTE: This is graded based on competencies and is a peer-reviewed activity. Your attendance is based on whether you are leaving a comment here or not and your score is based on answering the questions.

Figurative Language Definition:
Figurative language uses figures of speech to be more effective, persuasive, and impactful.
Figures of speech such as metaphors, similes, and allusions go beyond the literal meanings of the words to give readers new insights. On the other hand, alliterations, imageries, or onomatopoeias are figurative devices that appeal to the senses of the readers.

Figurative language can appear in multiple forms with the use of different literary and rhetorical devices.
Types of Figurative Language
The term figurative language covers a wide range of literary devices and techniques, a few of which include:

Simile
Metaphor
Personification.
Short Examples of Figurative Language
SIMILES
His friend is as black as coal.
He has learned gymnastics, and is as agile as a monkey.
METAPHOR:
My friend is a Shakespeare when in English class.
He was a roaring lion in anger, though now he is silent.
LITERAL LANGUAGE:
Literal language refers to the meanings of words, phrases, and sentences in their real or actual sense. ... Literal language is the language one uses to precisely say what one means. The meaning of literal language does not change, irrespective of the context in which it is.
Literal language is precise, and expresses exactly what the author or speaker means. ... Figurative language often uses symbolism, requiring the reader or listener to think beyond the words that are written. This type of language uses literary devices instead of relying on the actual meaning of words or phrases.
EXAMPLES:Some quick examples of literal language:

I write with a pencil
The sky is blue
The whiteboard is white
This question was asked and answered on Quora
My name is Veer
There is nothing fancy to literal language; it is clear and precise.
Figurative meaning in Urdu is Tamsili تمثیلی, where Figurative synonym is Figural and also find here definition and translation of Figurative.i dont know more.

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Fiza Mengal s/d/o Jaffer khan Mengal -
Well meraj
A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things in an interesting way. The object of a simile is to spark an interesting connection in a reader's or listener's mind. A simile is one of the most common forms of figurative language. Examples of similes can be found just about anywhere from poems to song lyrics and even in everyday conversations.

Similes and metaphors are often confused with one another. The main difference between a simile and metaphor is that a simile uses the words "like" or "as" to draw a comparison and a metaphor simply states the comparison without using "like" or "as".

An example of a simile is: She is as innocent as an angel. An example of a metaphor is: She is an angel. Do you see the difference? The simile makes a direct comparison, the metaphor's comparison is implied but not stated.
A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.
EXAMPLES:He is a shining star.
Her long hair was a flowing golden river.
Tom's eyes were ice as he stared at her.
The children were flowers grown in concrete gardens.

Figure of speech is like a (makeup) of any languageThrough this we can make any language more beautiful.

Example 1: chandi jesa rang ap ka sone (gold) jese all k baal.

Meaning: in the above line simply means someone praise the natural beauty in different way.

Example 2: yar ap to iron man ki tarah ho

Meaning: in this again someone praise the strenght power of man like he is very strong man.

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Palwasha Khan Jogezai -
That's right, it beautifies our speech! Good examples! Notice how we use foreign language (in this case English) and mix it in our language. What do you think this is known in linguistics?

Another interesting thing in your response is that it's used to express strength that a man has. What do you think we do here? Have any idea what such terms are called in linguistics?

The purpose is to guide you to the responses and not give away answers. I want you to learn and be independent in gaining knowledge. So get back and respond.

You have performed competently. But, for the next time, make sure that you take care of your font size. When you post, make sure that you only write in "bold" those sentences or words that you want to highlight. Not the complete message.

If you need any of my help with regards to technicalities of font size and all, you can ask me.

Looking forward to your responses!

*10.1*
Ans....

In my native language (pashtoo) we use many figurative speech and here I give some of them.
1: We use the sentence (هغه لکه شېر داسی دی۔) in english it means (He is like a lion) but it does not mean the in shape he is like a lion rather it means that he is brave .
And it is simile.
2: We use (دی هغه زړه ډبره ده) it means He is stone and it is Metaphor .
and it means that he is very cruel or miser.
3:We use this sentence in pashtoo for hyperbole(زر ځله می درته وویله چی لمونځ کوه) It means in english I told you thousand times to offer your prayer.
In figurative it means I told you so many times.

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Muhammad Luqman kasi s/d/o Muhammad asghar kasi -
Figurative language is when you use a word or a phrase that doesn't have its normal everyday, literal meaning.

Writers can use figurative language to make their work more interesting or more dramatic than literal language which simply states facts .

There are some common examples of various types of figurative language:

Hyperbole:
Big exaggeration, usually with humour.
Example in english
1) I am so hungry i could eat a horse.
Example in urdu
2)اج مجھےلاکھوں چیزیں کرنی ہے
I have million things to do today.

Metaphors:
Comparing two things by using one kind of object or using in place of another to suggest the likeness between them.
Example in english:
1)The snow is a white blanket.
2) her hair is silk.
Examples in urdu:
1) وہ میری انکھوں کا تارا ہے
He is the apple of my eye.
2)وہ ایک چمکتا ستارا ہے
He is a shining star.

Personification:
Giving something Human qualities.
Example in english:
The stuffed bear smiled as the little boy hugged him.
Examples in urdu:
1) چاند اور ستارے لکھا چھپی کھیل رہے تھے
The moon played hide and seek with the clouds.

Simile:
A figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as.
Examples in english:
1) As cute as kitten.
2) As hot as hell.
Examples in urdu:
1) وہ کتے بلیوں کی طرح لڑے
They fought cats and dogs.
2) وہ چینی کی طرح میٹھا ہے
He is as sweet as sugar.

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Izzat Ullah s/d/o Aulia Khan -
Definition Of Figurative Language:- When Words, Phrases are used to make our language beautiful, impressive and effective then it is known as figurative language OR When Don"t say directly something but pointing out or saying indirectly or indication is known as figure of Speech
For Example. Simile :- When we want to compere two different things by using like or as
E.G "Tum Sheer Ke Tara Bahadur Ho" " Wo Chaand Jesi Pyaari Hain"
Meaning :- "You are as brave as Lion" And "She is As beautiful as Moon"

2nd One is Hyperbole:- When We Exaggerate Something Or Speak More Than Required
E.G " Main Tumhey Hazar Dafa bata chuka ho ke apne kaam khod kiya karo" "Main itna tak gaya ho ke ek saal tak soo sakta ho"
Meaning :- " i Have told you thousand times that do your works yourself " I Am very tired even i can sleep for a year"

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Abdul sattar s/d/o Rafiullah khan -
Dear Aizzat
Comparison of quality,,, WE Compare the qualities of two different objects by as/like words is called simile ....we compare the common quality b/w them... not resembling the Animal and Man because either man can act like lion nor line as a man..
We just compare their correlating qualities... which is common in both like (bravery)
In reply to First post

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Abdul sattar s/d/o Rafiullah khan -
{1}Smile :(تشبیہ )
Comparison b/w two different objects on their correlating qualities...
کسی دو مختلف خاصیت رکھنے والے چیزوں کے مشابہ صفات کا موازنہ (comparison) کرنے کو تشبیہ(simile) کہا جاتا ہے اور اس میں خصوصا لفظ تشبیہ (جیسا/کی طرح /جیسی۔۔۔وغیرہ ) کا ہونا لازمی جز ہیں ۔

=Usage and Meaning...

E.X,,, Nabela's eyes looks like Deer ...( Nabeela has beautiful and sparkling eyes ) here Nabela's beautiful eyes are resembled with deer eyes.

Borrow one different object all qualities for the another other one and call it the representative of that object, which is not literally applicable except figuratively...

کسی مختلف چیز کی نمایاں اور اہم خصوصیات یا صفات کو مکمل طور پر ادھار لے کر دوسرے چیز کیلئے ہو بہو استعمال کی جائے استعارہ کہلاتا ہے ۔

Usage and Meaning:
Akber is Lion.

Here lion's notable quality (valor/ bravery) is completely borrowed and use for Akber(Akber is boy) ...here this means akber is very brave man .

The main difference between Simile and metaphor is that we use (as , like etc,,) words in simile but in metaphor we don't such like that ,,, actually we directly call the object with out comparison in metaphor...

{3} Personification (تجسیم)

This figure of speech means to use human qualities with inanimate objects, animals , and plants , is called personification.

حیوانا(Animals)،نباتات (plants)اور دوسرے بےجان اشیاء(inanimate objects) کو انسان صفات اور خاصیت دینے کو تجسیم(personification) کہا جاتا ہے ۔۔۔

Usage and meaning :-
E.X,,, Flowers are dancing..
Flowers can't dance but slowly they can be moved by air, so here human beings quality is used for them in order to beautify and make vivid the meaning of sentence. This helps to beautify the language of a speaker.

This sentence is just METAPHOR because you directly compared ""Afzal"" with """Allah ki Gaye""..
The other sentence=

""اکرم ایک سفید پوش انسان ہے"
This is a literal speech/language because it does not have another meaning in the background although it is just in a simple Sense therefore, it is not considered as a figurative language....

Mostly figurative language used in writing to convey any message indirectly As like in urdu we use

(1) مراد پانا

Which means to get success

For Example In urdu we say

عامر کاروبار میں مراد پانا چاہتا ہے

(Amair wants to get success in business)

(2) پانى ميں آگ لگانا

  Which means To create/spread violance

Example

شدت پسند ہميشہ پانى میں آگ لگاتے ہیں

Terrorists always create violance

(3)دل بیٹھنا

 Which means giving up

Example

حالات کے وجہ سے اس نے تعلیم حاصل کرنے  سے دل نہیں بيٹھا يا

Beacuse of situations he didn't give up to get education.

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Meraj Ud Din s/d/o Ghulam Haider -
Q No1: Share at least 2 or 3 figurative speech in Urdu or your native language, with their meanings and how they are used.

My native language (Mother tongue) is Pashtoo but I would like to share 2 or 3 figurative speech in Urdu.

They are as following:
#1: Metaphor (استعارہ)
#2: Simile( تشبیہہ)
#3: Hyperbole(مبالغہ)

#1: Metaphor (استعارہ)
Meaning:

Usage:
استعارہ میں کسی ایک شے کو ہوبہو دوسری شے مان لیا جاتا ہے. جیسے کہ نیچے لکھے گئے جملے میں عبداللہ کو شیر کہنا..
عبداللہ تو شیر ہے۔

(So it does not mean that Abdullah is look like a lion but it indicates his bravery)

#2: Simile( تشبیہہ)
Meaning:
تشبیہ کا لفظ "شبہ" سے نکلا ہے جس کے معانی "مماثل ہونا" کے ہیں۔
Usage:
تشبیہ کو استعمال کرنے کیلئے (کی طرح اور کی مانند) جیسے الفاظ استعمال کرنے ہونگے...

جیساکہ:
عبداللہ شیر کی طرح بہادر ہے
بچہ چاند کی مانند حسین ہے

As like in English for simile we use (like and as) similarly in Urdu we use (کی مانند، کی طرح وغیرہ وغیرہ)for simile

نوٹ؛
استعارہ اور تشبیہ میں یہ فرق ہے کہ استعارہ تشبیہ سے زیادہ بلیغ ہوتا ہے۔ تشبیہ میں ایک چیز کو دوسری جیسا قرار دیا جاتا ہے جب ان میں کوئی صفت یا خوبی مشترک ہو لیکن استعارے میں ایک چیزکوہوبہودوسری چیزمان لیا جاتاہے

#3: Hyperbole(مبالغہ)
Meaning:
مبالغہ کے لغوی معنی ہیں حد سے بڑھنا۔ شعری اصطلاح میں مبالغہ اس صفت کا نام ہے جس کے ذریعے کسی شے یا شخص کی بعید از قیاس تعریف یا مذمت کی جاتی ہے۔

Usage:
مثال کے طور پر
کل رات ہجرِ یار میں رویا میں اس قدر
چوتھے فلک پہ پہنچا تھا پانی کمر کمر

اس شعر میں شاعر نے آنسوﺅں کے لیے مبالغہ استعمال کیا ہے ایسی بات بیان کی ہے جو حقیقتاً ممکن نہیں
In the above mentioned lines of Urdu poetry, the poet use the hyperbole for extensive sadness which is not possible.

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

Q)
Answer...
=Literal speech=(ادبی زبان)
This is a precise, clear, and easy language that tell the reader and writer an actual and original meaning of words and phrasees. It deals with ""to the point ,""meaning or translation, and does not have the extra version and complexities.
Figurative speech=(مرادی زبان)
When we describe something by comparing with something else to make a message then, we use figurative language. In this language there are complexities, confusion and not limited to word's own meaning. It forces a person to go behind the background to find the alternative meaning.
=Example in urdo....
جب علی کو کوئی بات کرتا ہے تو وہ ""جلدی مرچ کی بوری پر بیٹھ جاتاہے
مندرجہ بالا جملے میں اس سے مراد یہ ہے کہ جب علی کو کوئی ایک بات بولتا ہے تو وہ جلدی غصہ ہو جا تا ہے اور ماتے پر بارہ بجا دیتا ہے
There are many forms of figurative language but some of them are explained following.
SIMILE=(تشبیہ)
SIMILE is a figurative speech that compare one thing to another thing with using "as""and ""like"'.It make s writing or reading more interesting and lyrical. It Sparks reader imagination while getting the information across.
Example in urdo....
طلباء ایسے مصروف ہیں جیسے شہد
کی مکھیاں
مندرجہ بالا جملے میں طلباء کو شہہد کی۔مکھیوں سے تشبیہ دی گئی ہے کیونکہ شہد کی مکھیاں دن رات اپنے چھتوں پر رس بنا میں مصروف رہتے ہیں۔
Metaphor=(استعارہ)
It is another dominant form of figurative language in which we compare something directly with out using the ""as'"and""like"".
Example in urdo....
جب ستار نے اندھیرے میں دروازہ بند کیا تو والد نے اسے کہا""دروازہ کیو ں بند کیا الو ""'
مندرجہ بالا جملے میں ستار کو الو سے اس لیے تشبیہ دیا کیونکہ الو ایک بےوقوف جانورہے اور اس نے احمقانہ کام کیا۔۔۔۔
Personification=(شخصیت،)
The most important figure of figurative language in which we give the human characteristics to non-human beings. This can be applied on the plants, animals and earthly things.
=Example in urdo.......
=Hyperbole(اتار چڑھاؤ)
In hyperbole or exaggeration, someone emphasizes to narrate something in a highly effective way that is impossible in the real world..
Example in urdo....
میں بہت دنوں سے بھوکا ہوں اس لیے میں ایک نوالہ میں رو روٹیا ں کھاسکتا ھوں
اگر وہ مجھ سے شادی کر تی ہے تو میں پہاڑ ھلانے کو بھی تیار ہوں۔
مندرجہ بالا جملوں میں دو باتیں بیان ہوئی ہے جو صرف خیالات پر مبنی ہے۔۔۔ کرنا بہت مشکل ہے

The above mentioned forms of figurative language are the basic part of languages in particularly in comparison words. These forms are used not only our native languages but also in the languages of the entire world. These are being used by the people in a traditional and a natural phenomenon way........

by Meraj Ud Din s/d/o Ghulam Haider -
Janat khan, I think there is little bit of difference between "Hyperbole and Exaggeration"

Let's check how!!
Exaggeration vs Hyperbole

Exaggeration simply means going over the top. An example is when you are waiting for your friend, and you've been waiting 5 minutes, but you say to him: 'I've been waiting for like half an hour!'

Hyperbole:
Whereas, Hyperbole means unrealistic exaggeration. In simple words, in hyperbole the writer exaggerate more and more that looks impossible.
Take the same situation "You are waiting for your friend, and you've been waiting 5 minutes, but you say to him: 'I've been waiting for like 5 days! So, it's look unrealistic impossible to wait 5 days for your friend.

The example which you are going to me is totally exaggeration no one can deny of it. As I mentioned that """hyperbole is is a overstatement that exaggerates a particular conditions for emphasis ;same is the case with exaggeration..
Now you got ? If you are still stand on your own decision then please prove the booth with examples and differences.......
On the other hand, you have mentioned that ""in hyperbole, the writers exaggerates a thing that will be impossible same is the case with exaggeration. Here you proved it yourself...

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Muhammad asif s/d/o Allah din -
After watching this video I became able to
define and understand the LITERAL and FIGURATIVE languages.
so my dear peers literal language is exactly what it says ,
while figurative language create interest and gain readers attention,
and uses similes ,metaphors ,hyperbole ,and personification to describe some thing
often through comparison with some thing different.
1. Simile is part of figurative language where two things are directly compared and ''as ''or ''like''
is usually used to compare .
example,, mera beta chand ki tarah hi.
my son is like a moon
2.us ka jism pather ki tarah hi.
his body is hard as a rock .
in these two example emerge that son is beautiful as a moon
and in 2nd example .his body is very firm '
in both examples actual words and meaning are hidden .
2.METAPHOR, part of figurative language which compares two things without using like or as.
example ,, Ilam kamyabi ki chabi hi.
knowledge is key to success.
Wo chalti pherti ketab hi ,
he is walking encyclopedia .
as and like are not used there metaphor.

3.PERSONIFICATION,, part of figurative language in which human qualities like movement ,feelings ,expressions, etc
are given to something non living things .
example , Setare mujh se sharmate hain.
the stars winked at me .
Setare asmaan pe naachte hn.
lighting danced across the sky .
in these two examples human characters are given to non living things
WINKED mean sharmana is human character is given to stars
and DANCE is also human character is given to stars .

4.HYPERBOLE ,extreme overstatement ,not meant to be take seriously ,but consciously used to create certain impression upon the audience ,
example ,main tum se sadion se nhn mela .
I haven't met you in centuries .
bohat lambi lambi chorte hn aap ,
you leave too long .
in 1st example i used centuries it is impossible to live till centuries in this time
but it is overstatement to understand the hyperbole.

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Saif Ud Din s/d/o Mehrab Ud Din -
As we are asked to share at least 2 or 3 figurative speeches in urdu or native language along with their meanings that how they are used .

I will share some three figurative speeches in English with urdu meanings along with examples.

(1) Simile :(تشبیہہ)
* Comparison between two nouns and finding same quality in both is called simile.
تشبیہہ.

دو اسموں کے درمیان موازنہ اور ایک جیسے معیار کو تلاش کرنا دونوں کو تشبیہہ کہتے ہیں

Examples.
* He is as fast as lion .
وہ شیر کی طرح تیز ہے

* He writes as clearly as his teacher.
وہ اپنے استاد کی طرح واضح طور پر لکھتا ہے

(2) Metaphor.(استعارہ)
A metaphor is an implied simile, it  is not like simile to state that one thing is like another or acts as another, but takes that for granted and proceeds as if the two things were one.
:
استعارہ ایک مضمر تشبیہہ ہے ، یہ بیان کرنا تشبیہہ نہیں ہے کہ ایک چیز دوسری چیز کی طرح ہے یا کسی دوسرے کی طرح کام کرتی ہے ، بلکہ اس کو قدر کی نگاہ سے دیکھتی ہے اور آگے بڑھ جاتی ہے جیسے دونوں چیزیں ایک ہیں۔
Example.
* He was a lion in the fight.
وہ لڑائی میں شیر تھا

It does not mean that he was a lion , it means he was brave like a lion .

(3) Hyperbole(مبالغہ)

In hyperbole a statement is made emphatic by overstatement.

Example.
* If the river were dry, I would fill it with tears .
اگر دریا خشک ہوتا تو میں اسے آنسوں سے بھر دیتا۔
* I am energetic enough to fly to the sky .
میں آسمان پر اڑنے کے لئے کافی توانائی مند ہوں

.
Whatever I understood, I searched, worked on it, tried to make few sentences. If there is any mistake, so kindly rectify my mistakes and help me .

Thank you .

Figurative Language:

Figurative language refers to a language that deviates from the conventional order and meaning in order to convey a complicated meaning, colorful writing, clarity, or evocative comparison. It uses an ordinary sentence to refer to something without directly stating it.

Figurative speech :

Urdu language  is full of figurative speech but we hve been asked to tell only 2 or 3 examples frome urdu language

1: we us the sentence

ُوہ بچہ چاند کی طر ح ہے

In urdu it means (that child is like moon ) and here the word (moon) has been used as simile .

2: The sentence

میں غم سے مر رہا تھا

Means in english  that i was dying from sorrow and it is hyperbola.

3: In urdu we use a sentence

وہ گدھ ہے

Which literally means that he is donkey  but figuratively  it mean that he is so stupid  and is metaphor .

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Zarjan s/d/o Umar khan -

Literal vs. Figurative Language

Literal language means exactly what it says, while figurative language uses similes, metaphors, hyperbole, and personification to describe something often through comparison with something different. See the examples below.

Literal Descriptions

 Grass looks green.  گھاس سبز رنگ کی نظر آتی ہے۔

 Sand feels rough. ریت کھردرا محسوس ہوتی ہے۔

 The flower smells sweet. پھول سے میٹھی خوشبو آتی ہے۔

 Grasshoppers make a high pitched noise. گھاس فروش اونچی آواز میں شور مچاتے ہیں۔

Figurative Descriptions

 The grass looks like spiky green hair. (simile)  گھاس سبز رنگ کے بالوں کی طرح دکھائی دیتی ہے۔ (مثالی)

 Sand is solid water. (metaphor)  ریت ٹھوس پانی ہے۔ (استعارہ)

 The flower has the sweetest smelling petals in the world. (hyperbole) flower پھول دنیا میں سب سے میٹھی خوشبو دار پنکھڑیوں کی حامل ہے۔ (ہائپربل)

 Grasshoppers are fiddlers who play their legs. (personification)  گھاس فروش فرڈل ہیں جو اپنی ٹانگیں بجاتے ہیں۔ (شخصیت)

Figurative Speech Comes in Many Forms

Simile (comparisons often with as or like): as smooth as silk, as fast as the wind, quick like a lightning bolt.

Metaphor (implicit comparison without like or as): You're such an airhead. It's bursting with flavor.

Hyperbole (exaggerating statement): In order to get my assignment done, I'll have to burn the midnight oil.

Personification (giving something a human quality): The sun smiled down on me. The leaves danced in the wind.

She's drowning in a sea of grief. (metaphor) وہ غم کے سمندر میں ڈوب رہی ہے۔

I move fast like a cheetah on the Serengeti. (simile) میں سرینگیٹی پر چیتا کی طرح تیزی سے بڑھتا ہوں۔ (مثالی)

The sea lashed out in anger at the ships, unwilling to tolerate another battle. (personification) بحری جہازوں پر سمندر غصے میں ڈوب گیا ، اور کسی اور جنگ کو برداشت کرنے کو تیار نہیں تھا۔ (شخصیت)

The sky misses the sun at night. (personification) رات کو آسمان نے سورج کو یاد کیا۔ (شخصیت)

I've told you a million times to clean your room! (hyperbole) میں نے اپنے کمرے کو صاف کرنے کے لئے ایک ملین بار بتایا ہے! (ہائپربل)

Her head was spinning from all the new information. (hyperbole) اس کا سر تمام نئی معلومات سے گھوم رہا تھا۔ (ہائپربل)

She was living her life in chains. (symbolism) وہ اپنی زندگی کو زنجیروں میں بسر کر رہی تھی۔ (علامت)

Figurative language refers to the color we use to amplify our writing. It takes an ordinary statement and dresses it up in an evocative frock. It gently alludes to something without directly stating it. Figurative language is a way to engage your readers, guiding them through your writing with a more creative tone.

This coffee shop is an ice box! (metaphor) یہ کافی شاپ ایک آئس باکس ہے! (استعارہ)

Metaphor

When you use a metaphor, you make a statement that doesn't literally make sense. For example, "Time is a thief." Time is not actually stealing from you but this conveys the idea that hours or days sometimes seem to slip by without you noticing.

Metaphors only makes sense when the similarities between the two things being compared are apparent or readers understand the connection between the two words. Examples include:

He has a heart of stone. اس کا دل پتھر ہ

Simile

A simile also compares two things. However, similes use the words "like" or "as."

Examples include:

Brave as a lion. شیر کی طرح بہادر

The tall girl stood out like a sore thumb. لمبی بچی انگوٹھے کی طرح کھڑی ہو گئی۔

My mouth was as dry as a bone. میرا منہ ہڈی کی طرح خشک تھا۔

Personification

Personification gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas. This can really affect the way the reader imagines things. Personification is often used in poetry, fiction, and children's rhymes.

Examples include:

Opportunity knocked at his door. موقع نے اس کے دروازے پر دستک دی۔

The sky was full of dancing stars. آسمان رقص ستاروں سے بھرا ہوا تھا۔

The sun played hide and seek with the clouds. سورج بادلوں کے ساتھ چھپ چھپا کھیلتا ہے۔

Hyperbole

Hyperbole is an outrageous exaggeration that emphasizes a point. It tends toward the ridiculous or the funny. Hyperbole adds color and depth to a character.

Examples include:

You snore louder than a freight train! آپ مال بردار ٹرین سے زیادہ زور سے خرراٹی کرتے ہو!

I had to walk 15 miles to school in the snow, uphill, in bare feet. مجھے برف سے ، ننگے پاؤں میں ، 15 کلو میٹر پیدل اسکول جانا تھا۔

Symbolism

Symbolism occurs when a word has its own meaning but is used to represent something entirely different.

Examples in everyday life include:

Using the image of the American flag to represent patriotism and a love for one's country. حب الوطنی اور اپنے ملک سے محبت کی نمائندگی کرنے کے لئے امریکی پرچم کی شبیہہ کا استعمال۔

Incorporating a red rose in your writing to symbolize love. اپنی تحریر میں ایک سرخ گلاب کو شامل کرنا محبت کی علامت ہے۔

Alliteration

Alliteration is a fun sound device. It is the repetition of the first consonant sounds in several words.

Examples include:

We're up, wide-eyed, and wondering while we wait for others to awaken. ہم اٹھے ہوئے ہیں ، بڑی آنکھوں والے ہیں ، اور حیرت زدہ ہیں جب ہم دوسروں کے بیدار ہونے کا انتظار کرتے ہیں۔

Betty bought butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the bitter butter better. بیٹی نے مکھن خریدا لیکن مکھن تلخ تھا ، لہذا بیٹی نے تلخ مکھن کو بہتر بنانے کے لئے بہتر مکھن خریدا۔

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is also a sound device where the words sound like their meaning, or mimic sounds. They add a level of fun and reality to writing.

Here are some examples:

The burning wood hissed and crackled. جلتی ہوئی لکڑی اچھال اور پھٹے۔

Sounds of nature are all around us. Listen for the croak, caw, buzz, whirr, swish, hum, quack, meow, oink, and tweet. فطرت کی آوازیں ہمارے چاروں طرف ہیں۔ بدمعاش ، کاؤ ، بز ، گھومنے ، سوش ، ہم ، کوک ، میانو ، اونک ، اور ٹویٹ کے لئے سنیں۔

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Nabeeha ilyas s/d/o Muhammad ilyas -
After watching the recommended video I would like to share some common figures of speech in use they are Simile Metaphor and personification
Simile is a comparison between a person (sometime) and their qualities using 'as' or 'like'
for example:
As light as feather which means (پر جتنا ہلکا)
As hot As Hell ( جہنم جیسے گرم)
They fought like cats and dogs (وہ جانوروں کی طرح لڑے)
Metaphor is comparison without 'as' or 'like' that metaphor is "comparison with out 'as' or 'like' that implies the concept share some quality or trait"
For example "she has such a Bubbly personality" here we refers "Bubbly personality" as she has such a "charming personality".
"The man on a bench is feeling blue" here 'blue' means 'sad'
"she is going through a roller coaster of emotions"
it means 'she is going through a lot of different moods'
Personification gives humans traits and qualities that has emotions, desire, sensations, gestures, and speech.
personification is much used in "visual arts"
Forr example "the leaves are waving in the wind"

Re: 10.1 Figurative Language

by Syed Maqbool Ahmed s/d/o Syed hazrat Ali -
A hyperbole is a type of figurative language. Therefore, a hyperbole is not meant to be taken literally. A hyperbole is an overstatement that exaggerates a particular condition for emphasis.

Example of Hyperbole

mujay bahot bhook lagy hay may pura dumba ka sakta hu.

This example of hyperbole exaggerates the condition of hunger to emphasize that the subject of this sentence is, in fact, very hungry.
Personification is a figure of speech  in which a thing – an idea or an animal  – is given human attributes.
#2
PERSONIFICATION..
The non-human objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have the ability to act like human beings. FOR EXAMPLE
1....
ASMAN KHOON K ANSU RO RAHA HAY.
we are giving the sky the ability to cry, which is a human quality. Thus, we can say that the sky has been personified in the given sentence.
2....
WAQT BHAGA CHALA JA RAHA HAY.

here running is the ability of living things but we used it with non livingthing(time)
so we can say time has been personified.

I cherished this lesson and in fact this lesson fascinates everyone of us. Whenever I shuffle through Wren and Martin's HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION book, my eyes leave not a single chance to stop their sight on the figurative speech.
The most interesting among these figurative speeches is the hyperbole and secondly metaphor.
THERE is a hilarious Balochi movie in which figurative speech is used a lot and there is a boy who does quite unusual acts. Once his paternal uncle while eating food, said in Balochi language ( MANI PUSHTA LAGAT BEJAN O BOR) and the boy gets up and kicks his hump which in fact literally is correct but figuratively means (JUST REVEL IN COMESTIBLES DUE TO ME)

Certainly , it is an amazing topic , i read it with fun , where i found the types of figurative language with such interesting examples .

( Figurative Language )

The language when you use a word or phrase that doesn't have its normal everyday , literal meaning .
Writers can use figurative language to make their work more interesting or more dramatic than literal language which simply states facts .
It has several types ,
1 , Simile
2 , Metaphor
3 , Metonomy
etc ,
1 , Simile :
A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind , used to make a description more empathetic or vivid .
Example ,
وہ ایسا سخت ہے , جیسا پتھر

2 , Metaphor :
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it isn't literally applicable .
Example ,
اسکا دل ہیرہ ہے

3 , metonymy :
A figure of speech which replaces the name of a thing with the name of something else , with which it is associated .
Example ,

آو میں تجھے ہاتھ دو

On The Behalf OF Shair Khan. His Website Is Showing An Error

Figurative language Is easy and Funny Language Through Which We Compare real Things From Imaginary Things
First Example Of Figurative Language Is Simile Comparing Two Completely Different Things
E.G He is As Clever As Fox وہ لومڑی کی طرح چالک ہے
The Glow of His Face was As Brighten As Sun Shine اس کے چہرے کی چمک اتنی روشن تھی جیسے سورج کی چمک

2nd Example Is Metaphor when we give the qualities of imaginary things or inapplicable actions to real things
E.g Our Teacher Is An Angle ہمارا استاد ایک فرشتہ ہے
You Have The Heart OF Gold آپ کے پاس سونے کا دل ہے

In this recommended video I wanted to share some common figures of speech. They are:smilies, metaphor, personification.
1:Similies:
A comparison b/w two things. Smilies use the words "like" or "as".
For example:
پہاڑیوں کی طرح پرانا
As old as the hills.
اتنا اونچا جتنی کے گرج
As loud as a thunder.
ڑھانچے کی طرح دبلا پتلا
As lean as skeleton.

2:Metaphor:
When we use a metaphor we make a statement that doesn't literally make a sense
For example:
"time is a theif"
Time is not actually stealing from you but this conveys the idea that hours or days sometimes seem to slip by without you noticing.
~Metaphors only makes sense when the similarities between the two things being compared are apparent or readers understand the connection between the two words.
For example:
Time is money.
He has a heart of stone.
3:Personification:
It gives human characteristics to animals, or ideas. This can really affect the way the reader imagines things. Personification is often used in poetry, fiction, and children's rhymes.
For example:
1: Opportunity knocked at his door.
2:The sun greeted me this morning.
3:The sky was full of dancing stars.
